DESCRIPTION
On Belay is seeking a compassionate, strategic, and driven Executive Director to lead our mission to build a supportive community for youth impacted by a loved one’s cancer. Through year-round adventure programs across New England, we help hundreds of youth and their families feel less alone during one of life’s toughest challenges.
ABOUT ON BELAY
On Belay is a New Hampshire based nonprofit organization that provides free year round adventure programs for youth impacted by a loved one’s cancer. On Belay’s programs are intentionally designed to utilize adventure programming to provide a supportive community of peers who “get it,” uncover inner resilience, and to provide a space to have fun! On Belay’s programs take place in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Maine and serve kids from every state in New England. The organization has experienced a period of growth over the last four years, expanding its programming over 100% in that time.
Position Overview:
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director (ED) will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for On Belay’s staff, programs, fundraising, and mission execution. The ED will serve as the public face of the organization, deepen community partnerships, and ensure the ongoing excellence of our programs and services. The ED will be a visionary leader who ensures On Belay continues to grow as a model of resilience, adventure, and community. This position is a hybrid role with the expectation that the Executive Director will work from our Newmarket, NH office at least 2 days a week. Regional car travel is expected. Some weekend and evening work required.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Management
Ensure program excellence, rigorous evaluation, and consistent quality of operations, finance, fundraising, communications, and systems.
Recommend timelines and resources needed to achieve strategic goals.
Recruit, engage, and inspire volunteers, board members, donors, and community partners.
Support and maintain a strong Board of Directors; foster board involvement in strategic direction.
Hire, train, lead, and mentor Senior Program Director and any additional staff required by the organization.
Implement effective systems for tracking progress and measuring impact.
Foster a culture of inclusion, compassion, and accountability.
Fundraising & Communications
Strengthen On Belay’s brand visibility through thoughtful communications and outreach.
Build and steward relationships with donors, funders, and partners.
Collaborate with the Board to share On Belay’s long-term vision and growth strategy.
Develop and lead a diversified fundraising strategy including individual giving, corporate sponsorship, and grants.
Identify and cultivate new partnerships and funding opportunities.
Serve as a visible ambassador for On Belay in local and regional communities.
Coordinate and execute annual fundraising events and other special events, including cultivating corporate sponsorships, building on current fundraising initiatives.
Administration & Operations
Manage financial planning and oversight for the organization.
Process all bookkeeping in Quickbooks Online.
Manage relationships and contracts with outside vendors.
Ensure compliance with nonprofit regulations and reporting requirements.
Qualifications:
Commitment to On Belay’s mission.
Proven leadership, coaching, and relationship management experience. Strong management skills.
Proven leadership experience in nonprofit management, preferably in youth development, social services, cancer care, or related fields.
Strong donor relations, marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders.
Excellent communication and relationship-building abilities.
Strategic thinker with the ability to execute tactically.
Expertise in strategic planning with a track record of successful implementation.
Action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable, and innovative approach to business planning.
Passion, idealism, integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven, and self-directed.
Proven ability in individual and corporate donor acquisition and event planning.
Experience using and managing CRM databases (experience with Little Green Light a plus).
Valid drivers license and reliable vehicle.
Ability to lift up to 40 lbs.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelors Degree or equivalent professional experience
Experience facilitating youth programming and an understanding of the principles of experiential/outdoor education.
Past success working with a Board of Directors, with the ability to cultivate existing board member relationships.
Strong financial and budgeting skills including basic bookkeeping tasks (experience with Quickbooks Online a plus).
Experience writing and managing grant proposals and applications.
Experience creating and maintaining marketing materials, collateral, and websites (experience with Canva and Squarespace a plus).
Compensation & Benefits:
Annual salary of $65,000-$75,000 commensurate with experience
