On Belay Connects Participants and Volunteers with Social Meida

Sasha | January 29th, 2010 | No Comments »

On Tuesday I learned about the power of Meebo. One of On Belay’s board member’s who is also the mother of two participants and a breast cancer suvivor mentioned her desire to give our particpants a virtual meeting place where they could connect betwen programs.

“You have to check out Meebo.” She said.

So I did. What an easy, secure way to offer affliate groups the opportunity to connect anytime they want!

Our webguru offered his help setting Meebo up inside out site and within a day or so we will be up and running.

If you are interested in connecting to our community please let me know and I can help guide you through the process.

Developments in social media and technology give On Belay participants the chance to continue buidling their community even when they are apart.

Caution Gingerbread Construction Saturday 12/12 10 am – 4pm @ UNH

Sasha | November 28th, 2009 | 2 Comments »

Caution: Gingerbread Construction was born at Mills Hall one October afternoon when our UNH volunteers decided they wanted to do something special to raise money for On Belay this holiday season.

The family oriented fundraiser will be held on Saturday, December 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Strafford Room at the University of New Hampshire. Teams are encouraged to build their own unique gingerbread house to compete for prizes in four categories. Registration fees are $10 per team and include admission, basic gingerbread kit, entertainment and refreshments.

Participants are encouraged to bring their favorite baking tools to help create their gingerbread house. Rolling pins, pastry bags and cookie cutters are all encouraged to show off your creative talents. Participants of this unique community event will enjoy entertainment and refreshments throughout the day as well as the joys associated with helping out an extraordinary program.
Participants can arrive at anytime to build their house and get it ready for judging at 3 p.m.

Millennials Enriching On Belay

Sasha | October 25th, 2009 | No Comments »

The WOW factor began building momentum for me when we called upon the directors of Mills and Fairchild Halls at The Unviserity of New Hampshire (UNH) this year to recruit students interested in volunteering for our 2009 – 2010 programs. This request wasn’t anything out of the ordinary, since On Belay’s inception students from UNH have volunteered to bake treats for breakfast and help out at our programs, but the response is what caught my attention.

Forty-two college students arrived for our first meeting!  Forty-two college students who have exams to study for, friends to gossip with, activities to participate in put their community first. These thoughtful and energetic twenty somethings not only wanted to help with the program, they wanted to build a relationship with our organization.

After the meeting I received a flurry of emails with ideas for fundraisers and offers of long term volunteer commitments.

Less than two weeks after the meeting I sat in awe of UNH’s only co-ed accapela group, Alabaster Blue. The group had spent the day on the other side of the state, performing and return to campus more energized then ever to hold a benefit concert for On Belay.

The very next morning, a the crack of dawn, fifteen bright eyed college students pulled into the parking lot at Camp Lincoln, site of our fall program. The forecast called for rain, sleet and snow and it delivered. In spite of the frigged temperatures and falling snow each and every volunteer rose to the occasion. Participants were absolutely joyful and unaware of the weather.

I left the program amazed at the selflessness I expereinced in the company of our college volunteers. In front of me is a generation of young people who believe it is their responsibility, their duty, to give back to their community. I look forward to seeing how this generation will continue to change the world.

Thank You for Keeping Kids On Belay

I am writing this post before our new site goes live. It is so exciting to watch On Belay mature, refine organizational practices, serve more and more families, and develop efficiencies. The advances made in the last year including the development of this brand new site would not have been possible without the heroic support of individuals, businesses, foundations and corporations who are now part of the On Belay family. When this site goes live I wanted to be sure everyone who visits knows these are the people who make this program possible. Please frequent their businesses, stop them in the street or say thank you quietly in your own way. There are more individuals who support our program then I can list so thank you to each and every person who has given their time, professional talent or financial treasure to support our growing program and to the following foundations and businesses our gratitude as well.
