ADVENTURE LEARNING PHILOSOPHY

While we recognize the importance of traditional support programs, ON BELAY is unique in our approach in that participants don’t spend even a minute sitting in a circle of chairs in an office talking about their feelings. Instead, they spend the entire day engaged in Adventure Learning activities.

Adventure Learning is the philosophy that we can learn a lot about ourselves, about other people, and about life through encountering and working through “adventurous” simulations. Such simulations can include, but are not limited to, individual activities of climbing a tree and crossing a tight rope (while harnessed and supported, of course!) to team activities of having to cross an “invisible river” in a certain amount of time with a limited amount of resources.

An On Belay day includes a variety of fun, interactive, community-building activities both on the ground and in the trees. Belayers will have the opportunity to build a base of trust helping them to work together on group challenges and to support one another in their activities on specially designed challenge course elements.

On Belay is run by experienced, certified adventure educators and facilitators. The philosophies of the day are:

  • “SAFETY FIRST” – Our trained facilitators are constantly aware of safety requirements and work all day to enforce them. Nothing is more important than our Belayers’ and our staff members’ safety.
  • “CHALLENGE BY CHOICE” - Each Belayer chooses just how and to what extent they want to challenge themselves.
