ABOUT ON BELAY

“Belay” is an old sailing term meaning to secure, to hold fast. In the world of Adventure Learning (specifically climbing) it refers simply to the use of a rope with a friction system to stop a climber’s potential fall.

BELAYERS are expected to be “on belay” for each other both literally and figuratively throughout the day. They walk away with valuable lessons in why seeking people who can be “on belay” for them, as well as why being “on belay” for others, is so important in helping to overcome life’s curveballs.

Within a supportive, community-oriented environment, On Belay combines the best of age-appropriate challenges with a variety of other activities designed to help Belayers regain a sense of personal power, security and control in what can feel like an upside-down world. On Belay provides a balance of support and challenge for the “Belayers” designed to help them reach new heights in both the physical and emotional senses.

  • On Belay is for children ages 10 - 18 who have faced or are currently facing the challenges of a parent or loved one’s diagnosis of cancer or other life-changing illness.
  • On Belay was developed exclusively with kids in mind. It offers an opportunity to be part of a community, knowing they’re not alone in their experiences while never having to say a word about what they share.
  • On Belay is different from other support groups, as it is based on adventure learning philosophies. It is a fun, interactive, and exciting experience.

HISTORYCrescentiaLeapofFaith

On Belay was founded by Crescentia Healy-True, a woman of great passion and vision, to fulfill an unmet need for healthy young people, who are often the forgotten demographic in the mix of one getting the news that they have a serious disease or illness.

The first On Belay program was held on June 5, 2004 at the University of New Hampshire’s Browne Center and served 18 participants. Since then, On Belay has taken place once each Fall and Spring season, serving almost over 150 participants!

On Belay continues in the memory and honor of our amazing founder, Crescentia Healy-True, and she continues to be our inspiration in all that we do.

On Belay is funded through private donations and grants. If you’d like to support On Belay you may send a tax-deductible contribution to the address above or call 1-886-44-BELAY to learn more about how you can help.
